Nadoja Dr. Rajkumar Study Chair
Introduction

As with history of any state, that culture chooses just a handful of people from its timeline to shape them as leaders. If Kuvempu, the great literary master known for his unique concept of the religion of mankind, the path of the universe is one such force to be reckoned with, while Nadoja Dr. Rajkumar is at the other end representing the cultural sphere. Sure he is to be seen as another power that the state shaped. It is amazing that Dr. Rajakumar, who came from a socially and economically subaltern society, was shaped into a prominent force to influence the socio cultural world of Kannada land, its politics and he became a phenomenon instrumental in saving the foundation of democracy. It must be so. Dr Rajakumar shaped the people’s thought and went on to remain settled in there. It must be for this reason that when this great actor of Kannada died, the entire land lamented the death as if it were a calamity at their own homes.

The need to undertake the task of investigating and examining the social causes behind the evolution of such a great cultural leader and its consequences need to be addressed.

As an icon of Kannada culture, D.r Rajakumar is considered as the historical phenomenon of Kannada land and also as its cultural leader. The life and achievements of Dr. Rajkumar are worth studying. Realizing this, the Government of Karnataka has established a chair in his name called Nadoja Dr Rajakumar Adhyayana Kendra to hold workshops, conducting serious research and studies on Kannada language, culture, theater and theatrical pursuits (to recognize his influence on), including his life and achievements in the Kannada University during the year 2006-07. It also provides for conducting seminars and other activities in related areas. The Karnataka Government has allocated Rs 15,00,000.00 for supporting the activities of the Nadoja Dr. Rajakumar Adhyayana Kendra at the Kannada University. The interest from this corpus has been set apart to carry on its operations.

Vision  and    Mission

In the context of ensuring endurance and development of Kannada land, its language, literature, and culture, it was a much needed but difficult task to culturally unify Karnataka. In such a big crisis, Dr Rajakumar as a person and as an acclaimed film hero took a well- balanced stand. He gave voice to the people from the village, town, city, literate and the illiterate and the people from various classes of society. That is why Dr Rajkumar stands tall among the people who participated in Kannada struggle. No one can deny that he was able to influence the masses to come together to unify Karnataka. He became the undisputed cultural leader, went on to grow into an undisputed leader of communities also. Many thought that in the hot pursuit of modernity and technology, Kannada language, literature, and culture have almost perished. However Dr Rajakumar’s moves saw them preserved. The primary concerns of the chair are to conduct all kinds of activities to provide a sustainable and beneficial process to Kannada land and society.

To study the effects of the phenomenon called Dr Rajkumar as a pioneer of social mobility, as a spirit that rebuilt Kannada culture, rather than merely viewing him as a popular hero or a singer.

  1. There is also a need to study the way in which Rajkumar’s Kannada movies shaped the political structure that we have come to understand and recognize as Kannada nationalism.
  2. There is no institution or centre for a comprehensive study of Kannada cinema and Kannada theatre. The purpose of the Chair is to overcome this inadequacy.
  3. There are some centres in which Kannada theatre-related activities are constantly taking place. But there is no centre in Karnataka that teaches and studies theatre in addition to theatrical activities. One of the objectives of the Chair is to make the theatre a nurturing and sustaining centre in this regard.
  4. The most influential medium of entertainment is cinema. Despite the attempts to understand the spheres that this medium has influenced among the masses, also as cultural critique, the chair needs to work to unravel its impact on the different sectors of the societies in our land. Such a purpose is also on the agenda of this chair.
