ABOUT LIBRARY :-
Kannada University was established in 1992 to promote studies, research and development in language, literature, culture and all related aspects of Kannada and Karnataka. A library with a meaningful collection and effective library service is the fundamental requirement for the efficient academic functioning of university. The achievements of a university can be gauged by the effectiveness of its library service. The library collection instead of being merely quantitatively rich must also qualitatively rich responding to the academic needs of the university. Such institution would automatically attract good faculty and the students. Akshara Granthalaya is moving ahead in this direction. The library’s main emphasis is on collection, preservation and dissemination of Knowledge.

Objectives:
This Library functions as an integral part of the university. The objectives of the University Library are:
- To build up a comprehensive and upto date collection of books, reports, and other non-book material in the disciplines taught and researched in the University;
- To organise the conventional and non conventional information sources in a systematic manner, in order to provide an efficient and prompt service to the clientele;
- To disseminate information by issuing documentation lists and other current awareness services for the benefit of teachers and researchers to keep them updated/abreast with the latest developments in their areas of interest;
To provide other services such as compilation of current and retrospective bibliographies, procurement of photocopies, preprints, reprints and other reference services;
ICT FACILITIES :-
Fruitful research emanates only after through study. With the advent of information & communication Technology (ICT) it has become imperative for the
libraries all over the world to collect, preserve and disseminate not only printed materials but also non – print materials, in whatever from they emerge. The university library has taken a giant leap in this direction by providing computerised; Internet, CD-ROM & Audio visual services to its users, Electronic resources can be searched under the UGC – INFONET Programme. The library intends to start a virtual library centre in the 11th plan period.

SERVICES :-

Circulation of Books:
The users are eligible to borrow books against identity card/borrower’s ticket for a period of 15 days. The books kept in reference section and the periodicals normally will not be issued. However under certain conditions the reference textbooks are issued to the faculty for overnight reference and return. Those who fail to return/renew the books within a specified due date will be levied an overdue charge of Rs. One per book per day.
Inter-Library Loan:
It is not possible for any institution, however rich its resources, to buy all the books published even in a discipline. Hence, it is inevitable to depend on other organisations to share information sources for the mutual benefit of users. Books not available in Kannada University Library but required by faculty members and research scholars will be procured from other university libraries on inter-Library loan. The INFLIBNET’s database on Internet is used for the location of the university library where the book in demand is available.
Reference Service:
Reference service means “Process of establishing contact between a user and his requirements in a personal way”. It is a personal service, which involves various activities, aimed at making information available to the users as easily as possible. Kannada University Library is having a sound reference source collection. Professional staff of the library make use of these resources as well as those resources available outside the Library. Either our staff may give the information which is required by the users or they guide them to browse the documents which contain the required information, depending upon their requirements.
Ready Reference Service and Long Range Reference Service:
In ready reference service Library staff will answer the users queries with the help of dictionaries, encyclopaedias, yearbooks, etc., which are more or less fact-finding questions. On the other hand Library staff also undertake long range service for the benefit of the users’ community. In this service, Library will offer the users the list of books on a given subject on demand.
Open Access:
The greatest advantage that a Library can offer to its readers is its open access or open shelf system. This system enables the users to have direct and easy access to the book collection providing good opportunity and freedom to examine and browse the books. It encourages the users to develop a closer acquaintance with the diversity of information sources available in the Library. Keeping this in mind, the Library is practicing Open Access System.
New Arrivals:
Some selected titles of new books acquired by the Library are displayed in ‘New Arrivals’ racks for the benefit of users. These books will be on display for at least one week and after that they will be made available to borrow.
Newspaper Clipping Service:
Newspaper clipping service is one of the most important services in a Library. This service is one of the most important services in a Library. The press clipping means the screening, scanning/cutting of news items etc., daily from newspapers in an organisation and sending them via e-mail to officials, decision-makers, and teachers etc., who will find them useful.
Xerox / Reprographic Service:
The Library provides reprographic service to the users on priced basis within the Library primessis. This saves the time of the users to a great extent.
Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC):
Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) facility has been provided for the benefit of the users to access databases of books, theses, dissertations and serials of our university collection. Proper training is also provided to the students, about the use of OPAC system, in the beginning of the academic year.
MEMBERSHIP :-
All the students, the researchers, the faculty members and the employees of the University are eligible for the membership of the Library. The registered members are issued Borrower’s Ticket corresponding to their entitlement. Kannada University Library is initiated in issuing bar-coded library identity cards for all its members. The entitlements, in terms of the number of books that can be borrowed by the members, are as follows:

Membership details and borrowing privileges:
Faculty Members, Research Scholars, Students of M.A.; Ph.D and Administrative Staff of the university are eligible to become members of the library. Membership is also available to the outside members.
Individual:
On payment of Rs 500/- p.a., and Rs.20/- p.d., any individual can become a library member of the library and he/she will be provided with the library membership card and such members will be permitted to use the library during working hours except the borrowing facilities.
Overdue Charges:
Overdue charges will be collected from the defaulters who is returning the book after the due date as per below mentioned rates.

LIBRARY RULES :-
- Borrower’s tickets are not transferable.
- Using mobile phones inside the library is strictly prohibited.
- Necessary action will be taken by the librarian against the users who are found to be misusing the service facilities, book collection etc.
- No outsides/ personal books are allowed in the library for reading purposes.
- The librarian may recall any book at any time if required.
- Silence should be maintained in the library.
- If a book is lost, the librarian has the power to decide whether the books has to be replaced or a fine is to be paid by the borrower. The fine will be changed up to six times the cost of the book’s current value, in addition to handling charges.

COLLECTIONS OF BOOKS :-
The library building around 5463sq. meters area is being used to accommodate an office, Acquisition Section, Technical section, Circulation Section, Periodicals Section, E- Resources Section and Librarian’s room. At present the library has a collection of 2,17,320 books, (including reference books 78,800), Rare books -1433, E-Books -169, Bound volumes – 2,371, Kannada Journals -06 and English Journals -22.
